Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit
Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
I like to take walks around the neighborhood. What’s interesting about these walks is that I am always finding “stuff”. It’s amazing how much you find lining the streets. I find at least a penny every time I am on a walk. My highest total was in coins scattered throughout the neighborhood that amounted to a dollar. As I walk the neighborhood, I find some people are throwing out perfectly useful items they no longer want or no longer fit with their aesthetic. They sit on the curb hoping someone will adopt them and give them a loving home. I try to oblige. Some items I see curbside are tired, broken or just plain worn. Then there are the lost items that are lying near the curbs. I’ve seen watches, jewelry, earbuds, toys, pens… Some of them are in pristine condition. Others are crushed or in a hundred pieces trampled by feet and cars. Most of us just walk by not giving a second glance to what’s on the curb.
Isn’t that just like life? I can’t speak for everyone but I know I’ve found myself curbside many times and I have experienced each of these conditions at some time in my life. There are times we may feel we have more to give but don’t know where to go. There are times we may feel frazzled, overworked and burned out and just want to find a place to hide from life. Sometimes, we may feel lost and adrift with no purpose, no anchor. Then there are those times when we feel broken or shattered by life and just trying to hold on. How blessed are we that we can call on Jesus, our anchor, when the chaos of life becomes too much to bear.
Then I thought about it from a different perspective. How many times have I not noticed those around me who may feel like they have been kicked to the curb? Jesus came to save those who were cast out and abandoned, the homeless, the marginalized, the broken and the lost. He also calls on us to reach out to and be His hands and feet in this world.
Prayer: Lord, how blessed I am that I can call on You in the times I feel like I have been sitting on the curb. Give me a heart like Yours and so I can reflect Your love to others who may be having a day where they feel they are on the curb.
