Hmmm. There’s a lot of buzz in the air, with people talking about new things they are learning about other generations in the church family. From Silents, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z and Polars (named in Professor Twenge’s book Generations read by the Good Book Club), we learn that technology is the major definer of unique generational characteristics.
BUT, come to Sunday’s See All the People Messy Church potluck lunch and experience that big differences are also found in foods, music, and shared experiences. So, sign up to bring a dish you enjoyed as a teen on the SignUp Genius, or let the office know what you will do. I’m a Boomer and am bringing banana pudding and tuna noodle casserole; remember those!? There’s a special bingo game — with prizes, too. You won’t want to miss it!
Still thinking of the Good Book Club — in November, participants will have read and discussed 39 books together, expanding awareness and knowledge on social issues, spiritual disciplines, select novels, contemplation, catastrophic illness, biographies, joy with the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, books of the Bible, seeking wisdom, keeping Christianity weird, and more. Come and be challenged to grow with us. You are welcome; just let Vicki Duane know of your interest so you can be kept in the know.
There’s a non-partisan movement, called Sacred Votes, calling all churches to encourage eligible voters to register and be counted in elections for their neighborhoods, states and nation. So, if you haven’t registered, please do it now… and vote!
Community UMC is hosting an outreach event featuring actress Anita Gutschick in three different stories from Scripture on Thursday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Seeing her transformations — as she portrays Sarah (too old), Martha (too busy) and the unnamed Sinful Woman (too sinful) – is amazing and will be a blessing. Tickets are $10 and are available online, after church this Sunday in the Fellowship Hall at Messy Church, and at the door. It’s a great opportunity to share with friends in the neighborhood, too!
Other previews of upcoming events are:
- Church Conference at Nichols-Bethel UMC on October 12 at 10 a.m. with business meetings and worship for several churches together
- Trunk or Treat with Community UMC and the CDC on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m., for which LOTS of candy and some more trunks are needed- sign up here!
- Generous Together fundraising for 2025 ministries and missions starts October 27 in worship and ending on November 17 with a special worship, meal, and gathering.
And, please pray for peace-makers and love to overwhelm warriors and hatred for all people and places in God’s precious creation,
Barb Julian, Lay Leader
